Summer Newsletter 2020

Happy Anniversary!
2020 marks the 20th anniversary of our first commercial wine and our 25th year since we planted Chestnut Garth Vineyard.  We have vivid memories of our five young boys under 10 years of age helping to plant rootlings with watering cans across 15 acres of well-prepared soil in our beautiful region.

A timely meeting with winemaker Simon Gilbert in 1999 led to our first vintage of Chestnut Garth Chardonnay, launched at the Parkview Hotel in Orange by my brother Steve Mortimer on November 14 in 2001.  Where has the time gone?  Many fine vintages have followed.

On Saturday November 14 2020 we will hold a party to celebrate 20 vintages with an open air concert featuring Robbie Mortimer and his band.  Bookings details can be viewed on our website from May.

MOO Club
Our MOO Club harvest delivery is about to be sent on March 1.  It contains some excellent vintages of Chardonnay and two vintages of our iconic Jules (2016 & 2017).  If you are not a member you can join on our website and be eligible for 20% discount on this selection and 15% on other purchases through the year.  Join on-line or email us for a membership form.

We have recently developed some unique and fun vineyard experiences for you to participate in.  Picnic in the Vines and Hire a Fire require nothing more than you relaxing with a hamper, wine and friends.  Take advantage of our beautiful vineyard and schoolhouse as if they are your own.  On a little more engaging level, you can participate in your Diploma of Taste or Afternoon Detention.  Both experiences run by Peter Mortimer require your input and give you a great learning experience behind the scenes.  Visit our Experiences tab on the website for  information.

The Long Lunch Bunch.  Saturday, 4 April.  Join us for an afternoon feast in the courtyard of the old schoolhouse.  Canapes/entree/grazing main and dessert will be served during the course of the afternoon.  Live tunes by Robbie Mortimer.  Wine & beer available for purchase.  This will be a great chance for you to kick back and enjoy an afternoon with local food, wine, music and friends.  Limited tickets @ $110 per person (includes a glass of Sparkles on arrival).  Bookings essential –

Leading into Christmas we have just released our first ever Chestnut Garth Merlot with its bold new packaging and a strong recommendation from our winemaker, Simon Gilbert.

We bottled a mere 69 cases so before it goes to market we are offering it to our MOO club members to place in your cellar.

It is $45 per bottle at the cellar door so with MOO discount it becomes $36 per bottle.  There is a limit of 12 bottles per member.

Order on-line or you can contact us and we can charge your card or send an invoice.  Freight will be $20 out of Orange.

Christmas is the time for unexpected guests and forgotten friends so it’s a wise move to have a ‘stash’ of quality wine in the cellar!

Christmas is also time for casual BBQ’s, early afternoon cheese and fruit with a sneaky glass of chardonnay.  We would like to add the following great specials which can only be purchased on-line up to 20 December.  These prices are per mixed case or straight.

RESERVE 2018 CHARDONNAY  – $25 (RRP $45)

A 6 pack with one of each wine will cost $113.  There is a limit of 12 wines for each purchase.

We wish you all a very happy christmas and we thank you for your loyal support as we move into our 20th yer of wine making.

Merry Christmas

Peter & Julie

2018 Orange Wine Show:

We entered 6 wines in the 2018 Orange Wine Show and won 6 medals!  They were not all gold but that speaks volumes for our consistency and viticulture practices. We did not enter our Sparkles, Autumn Merlot, Late Harvest or Twin Series Shiraz. The most valued accolade was a bronze for our Autumn Shiraz which actually won the Red wine of the show back in 2012. We feel that our best practice viticulture and Simon Gilbert’s winemaking experience is producing consistent, high quality every vintage.

Peter travelled to India with a delegation from NSW last last month to showcase NSW wine and food.  Renowned French educated Indian sommelier, Magandeep Singh presented our wines at two masterclasses in Delhi and Mumbai.  He was overwhelmed by the quality of our Jules and Reserve Chardonnay.  We were also invited to the Australian Consulate to showcase our wines with Australian Masterchef judge, Gary Mehigan hosting the night.  It was fine dining and wining at its absolute best.

Our MOO Club members would now be enjoying the Budburst selection and coming into summer, the Chestnut Garth Sauvignon Blanc will blossom after scoring a silver medal in this years wine show.  By the way, budburst is under way with recent rain changing our prospects.  Looking at the vineyard it is coming to life!

MOO Members only Special:

We are running out of our Stadium Series Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz as our stadium contracts have expired.  We will offer mixed or straight cases of these entry level wines only to the MOO Club for $100 per case.  Don’t expect super-premium but it is a very drinkable wine coming up to BBQ season.

Orange Wine Festival:

Our Spit Roast at Sunset on 13th October is fully booked and as it has been so popular, we have decided to team up again with Darren Tracey from The Sugar Mill to do it again during the FOOD week festival.  Stay tuned as we have limited spaces.

On Sunday, 14 October, we have live music by Robbie Mortimer from 1pm.  Feel free to bring a picnic and enjoy the sunshine.  The new playground is “hectic” and is proving a great place for families to visit and wine taste whilst the children are happily playing.   No BYO please.  Wines, beers and soft drinks are all available from the bar.

We look forward to your next visit to our Schoolhouse Cellar Door.
